Pyrgi Chios – The Medieval Village of Mastiha

A Glimpse of Pyrgi

Pyrgi is one of the most fascinating and picturesque villages on the island of Chios. Located about 25 kilometers south of Chios Town, it belongs to the historic “Mastihohoria” — the mastic-producing villages that make Chios world-famous. What makes Pyrgi truly stand out are its unique geometric wall decorations, known as xysta, carved into the façades of nearly every house.

History and Architecture

The village dates back to the Genoese period and has preserved its medieval charm. Narrow alleys, stone walls, and fortified houses were designed for protection against pirate raids. At the heart of Pyrgi stands the Church of the Holy Apostles, a Byzantine monument dating to the 13th century, considered one of the island’s most important landmarks.

Local Life and Experience

Today, Pyrgi remains a lively village where locals maintain strong traditions. Visitors can stroll through the maze-like streets, take photos of the decorative facades, and enjoy a coffee in the central square. Don’t miss tasting local products made from natural mastiha — a symbol of the island’s heritage. Pyrgi perfectly captures the soul of Chios, blending history, craftsmanship, and authenticity in every corner.
